Marcy Bergeron-Noa

Painting is how I explore the world, make sense of my experiences, and sometimes find refuge from both. I am a mixed media abstract artist working primarily in wax-based mediums, drawn to each for its distinct properties. For more than twenty-five years, my daily studio practice has been fueled by a love of discovery and a desire to keep growing: to experiment, hone my skills, and find greater depth and meaning in the work and in the world.

My inspiration comes from two sources. The first is nature. Quietly observing its intricate, orchestrated ecosystems has given me insight, calm, and refuge. The second is medicine and science, a result of my forty-year career in healthcare. That work gave me a close view of the triumphs, traumas, and frailties of the human body and spirit, and of the emotions, vulnerability, and resilience of the people who inhabit it. I carry many of those memories into the studio.

To me, these are not separate subjects. A capillary and a branch share a similar purpose, structure, and beauty; the human body and a tree are both part of intricate, life-sustaining systems. What interests me is what lies beneath the surface, the marks left by experience and memory, and the continual movement between disruption and renewal. Connection runs through all of it, including the essential role community and a sense of place play in our health and well-being.

I don't set out to paint a wound, a root system, or a dividing cell. I work intuitively, building layers as shapes emerge and lines connect, divide, interrupt, and repair. There is a constant tension between intention and surrender, between what I can control and what the materials reveal on their own. I rarely begin with a fixed outcome, and I resist rules and prescriptive formulas. That freedom, and the surprises that come with it, keep the work fresh and alive. Alongside the more serious undercurrents of vulnerability and healing, there is curiosity and play: quirky forms, unexpected marks, movement, and gesture.

I usually work in series, with several paintings developing side by side. Each one informs the next, creating a dialogue that wouldn't exist if they were made in isolation. Over time, a shared language develops, and each piece stays distinct while becoming part of something larger.

Increasingly, my work does more than celebrate the beauty and complexity of the living world. Painting is also a way to confront what troubles me and give those concerns a voice. I'm not interested only in making work that is pleasing or reassuring. I want paintings that invite curiosity, raise questions, and sometimes make us uncomfortable. Art can be an expression of wonder, but it can also be witness, protest, and warning. For me, making art is also a quiet rebellion against conformity and the misuse of power.

Marcy Bergeron-Noa is a mixed media abstract artist based in Beverly, Massachusetts, working primarily in oil and cold wax, encaustic, monotype, and collage. Her richly layered compositions evoke the intricate structures of the natural world and human body, where organic forms emerge, intersect, fracture, and reconnect. Beneath their often playful or familiar appearances lies a sense of unease, reflecting the fragile balance between order and disruption, vulnerability and resilience.

Drawing on a lifelong connection to nature and a forty-year career in healthcare, Bergeron-Noa brings a distinctive perspective to her exploration of the living world and human experience. Her intuitive, experimental approach embraces the unpredictable qualities of her materials, creating work that is both visceral and contemplative.

She has pursued studies, mentorships, and artist residencies nationally and internationally. Her work has been exhibited in New England, New York, and abroad.
